Leo van den Burg is interested in the relation between history and design, both in its cultural historic dimension and in the narrative aspects. He believes design is more than problem solving, but includes experiment, poetry and polemics. As a researcher, he has been involved in research projects regarding the relation between buildings and public space, the development of the 17th century inner city of Amsterdam, the development of small villages in the west of the Netherlands, cultural historic values as part of the urbanism profession and several research projects concerning water management and urban design.
